Tyvek® DrainWrap™ for Installing Western Red Cedar Cladding

Give your homes added protection without an added step

For maximum performance, the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association recommends DuPont™ Tyvek® DrainWrap™ for installing Western Red Cedar cladding.

DuPont™ Tyvek® DrainWrap™ is an innovative weather resistive barrier engineered with vertical grooves on the surface. When combined with flashing and weeps, DuPont™ Tyvek® DrainWrap™ can promote outstanding bulk water drainage in wall systems by helping channel moisture safely to the outside.

In addition, the breathable structure allows moisture vapor to pass through to promote drying in wall systems and help prevent the formation of mold and mildew.

Benefits of using Tyvek® DrainWrap™ with Western Red Cedar Cladding

Meeting enhanced drainage needs

In areas with substantial exposure to wind-driven rain, DuPont™ Tyvek® DrainWrap™ can enhance drainage behind claddings such as primed wood, fiber cement cladding and foam board applied over flat substrates. The inherent water-resistance properties of DuPont™ Tyvek® are enhanced with vertical grooves on the surface to help channel bulk water safely to the outside to help manage water that penetrates through claddings.

An air and water barrier with enhanced drainage offers several key advantages

Reduces energy costs

DuPont™ Tyvek® DrainWrap™ is specifically designed to provide superior water drainage, combat moisture and help prevent air infiltration—helping to protect the installed R-value of insulation for more comfortable, energy-efficient homes and buildings.

Protects walls

DuPont™ Tyvek® DrainWrap™ is durable and maintains a constant drainage rate even after repeated wetting and drying cycles—helping to protect the wall cavity from water that gets behind the cladding. Moderate to high vapor permeability helps to promote drying in wall systems to prevent the formation of mildew and mold.

Improves indoor air quality

The fibrous structure of DuPont™ Tyvek® DrainWrap™ is specially engineered with microscopic pores that allow moisture vapors to escape the wall cavity, but are so small that bulk water and air cannot penetrate the building envelope. Better ventilation of wall cavities helps prevent the formation of mold and mildew, helping to improve indoor air quality.

Easy installation

Because DuPont™ Tyvek® DrainWrap™ is pliable, it easily wraps around corners, interfaces at joints and over architectural elements. In addition, it is lightweight, making it easier to handle and faster to install.

How does Tyvek® DrainWrap™ work?

In areas with substantial exposure to wind-driven rain, Tyvek® DrainWrap™ can enhance drainage behind claddings including:

  • Primed wood, all six sides
  • Fiber cement cladding
  • Foam board applied over flat substrates

The unique, nonwoven fibe structure helps resist air infiltration and water intrusion to help prevent drafts and keep energy bills low.

DuPont™ Tyvek® DrainWrap™ is engineered with vertical grooves to promote outstanding bulk water drainage in wall systems by helping channel moisture safely to the outside.

The breathable structure allows moisture vapor to pass through to promote drying in wall systems helping prevent the formation of mold and mildew.
